Basketball
Basketball is not only a test of physical prowess; it also takes a lot of skill and a focused state of mind to perform well. Basketball is a team sport that requires the player to be selfless and learn the strengths and weaknesses of their teammates - a skill that can translate over to many other areas of expertise.
At the college level, the game is played in two halves (each lasting 20 minutes), while at the professional level, the game is played in four quarters (each lasting 12 minutes).
The point of the game is to score by bringing the basketball into the metal hoop attached to the goal, which is also why many players fondly refer to the game as "hoops." Players can earn one, two, or three points based on their position on the court.
Scoring one point: The player has been fouled and is allowed to shoot anywhere from one to three free throws where they will be uninterrupted by the other players.
Scoring two points: The player either shoots or brings the ball to the hoop while in front or within the three-point arc. If a player shoots with their foot on the three-point arc, this is considered a two-point shot.
Scoring three points: The player shoots from behind the three-point arc (the semi-circle solid line that surrounds the area in front of the goal). In the NBA, the three-point arc is 23 ft 9 inches directly in front of the basket and 22 ft in the corners. In college basketball, it is 19.9 ft from the center of the rim.
Of course, in basketball, there are many other rules than just the ways to score. There are comprehensive plays and fouling rules as well as a certain court "ethic."
